How to Identify Scams in Online Classifieds?

supaman | March 23rd, 2011 | Scams & Fraud

When trying to buy or sell using online classifieds, we are almost always dealing with complete strangers at the other end. For the most part, the other party is just like us trying to find a great deal or transact some unique or out-of-market item. However, every once in a while, the other party is a scam artist trying to get your personal information, item, money or in the worst case your identity from you.

There are very simple rules that you can follow to identify and avoid scams in online classifieds:

  1. Never share your personal information with someone you have not met.
  2. Avoid Posts that follow a template without specific details of service or item.
  3. If someone is calling you from VoIP services such as Skype, the person is likely a scam artist calling from a different country.
  4. If an offer is too good to be true (“I will give you $2000 for a 2 Year old 42″ LCD TV”), it is most likely a scam.
  5. Avoid checks and cashier’s checks. If you must take them, transact only after the check has cleared. In general, banks take 2-3 days to identify a fake check. Scammer’s try to use that time to their advantage.
  6. Avoid people who claim they will take your item for more money you have been asking for, if you take the post down immediately.
  7. Safest transactions require that as much as possible, deal locally with people who you will meet for the transaction and who are not very secretive about their face, numbers or emails.

Scammers try to hit 10s-to-100s of classifieds at once without details on the listing. With a little mindfulness, you can identify such acts and avoid yourself a lot of headache later.

Lookup tags – a win-win for buyer and seller

ranjanp | February 15th, 2011 | CL 2.0

CL 2.0 supports the concept of lookup for select tag formats. Let’s see how this works for you.

When selling items such as books, one can tag the post with a pre-formatted isbn string. CL 2.0 automatically looks up the isbn number and adds relevant book information below the post. It’s as simple as adding an “isbn:<isbn number>” to the tag field when you create a post. We are continuing to add more post categories for automatic lookups.

For a buyer, lookup tags add relevance to a post. Remember, an informed buyer is a happy customer. For a seller, it’s getting more with no additional work. Sell your items faster with CL 2.0 lookup tags.

What Makes a Good Classified Ad?

supaman | February 15th, 2011 | CL 2.0

Classified Ads are grass-root level advertising. Compared to other Online Advertising formats such as Google AdWords, Classified Ads are quite inexpensive as well. This is why Online Classified is a great way for individuals and small businesses to advertise their products and services to their most likely buyers and consumers.

However, just like with any other platform, not all Classified Ads make a good case for the product or service. So what makes a good classified Ad? Before we explore that, note that the purpose of a Classified Ad is to get inquiry. If the inquiry for the product or service matches consumer’s expectations, the transaction follows.

To get to the inquiry of appropriate consumer, a Classified Ad must have following components:

1. A Descriptive Headline

In online Classified Ads, not all links are clicked equally.  It is your headline that decides if your post will be viewed or not. A good headline is one that describes the key aspects of the product or service and makes a call to action, if needed. In general three components stand out in a good headline – Product highlight, Pricing highlight and urgency. Just compare the three headlines below and imagine which post is most likely to get the most amount of calls.

a) Must Sell By Friday – 2 Year old Xbox 360 in mint condition 50% off retail
b) 2 Year old Xbox 360 in mint condition – 50% off retail
c) 2 Year old Xbox 360

2. Short Post Body

The Classified Post body should be short yet detailed. The body should pack information not adjectives. The information should be able to help another person decide if it fits his or her need. Product condition is considered part of the information and should be clearly mentioned.

There are two approaches to describing product/service. As a seller/service provider, if you are interested in finding just the right person and get it over with, you want to put as much information as the other person might need.

However, if you are interested in generating a lot of leads for future as well, you would need to put just enough information that excites the user about the service being offered.

Pictures/Videos are worth million words in Classifieds and naturally get a lot of clicks to the post. So great posts always include bright, clear pictures of products.

3. Call To Action

Often missed, the call to action clearly describes what a interested person should do next. It could be a contact number with invitation to call, an email address or just a plain invitation to any question the viewer might have. A readable sentence have far more appeal than just the number itself. Consider these two:

1) Call (987) 654-3210 to know about our unbeatable Christmas pricing.
2) Interested? Contact: (987) 654-3210

4. Re-visit

In case your wording or scheme has not work, or you are getting more in-effective calls than effective one, be sure to Edit your classified Ad. Remember, it is like an advertisement for your product, if it is not effective, you can always reconsider pricing, description or just clarity in the description.

In the end, if you can put yourself in the shoes of your readers, you can be the best judge or your advertisement and effective advertisement will lead to more sales and more earnings.

A Classifieds Saga

supaman | January 25th, 2011 | CL 2.0, Social

Last year, a close friend moved to the Bay Area, California. A new job, a new family – his face was beaming with optimism for the first few weeks. I used to think settling down in the bay area comes naturally to anyone. But I was probably wrong. He is – what I would like to call – a smart buyer! He knows what to buy used and what to buy new. And he also knows what is the season to buy what stuff right. Video Games, Books, Cars – almost always used. Television, appliances – almost always new. Change of Rental Property – always in winter. And on and on.

So we proudly introduced him to “the” online classifieds for the Bay Area. And the result was as much surprising to him as it was to us. His first question – “Are you sure this is it? It looks a website from the early 90′s?”. And it really was more telling of what we had gotten used to as well. It really is the early 90′s when it comes to classifieds.

Ignoring the user interface, he gets down to finding the right apartment for himself. Besides, talking to agents, he is looking at some privately owned places. The short version of the search process is find interesting places after work, mail the listings to himself so he can access it on his iPhone, call the property owners from contact information somewhere in the listings, store all the notes to an iPhone note folder and drive to the right location. At the end of the day, the simple conclusion is that the classifieds service is just showing him a place and that’s it. No help if he wants information on the go. No help with any information about the neighborhood or services in that area that can facilitate decision making. His reaction – “Why can’t this rental service be like Zillow? And what’s the deal with ‘Peninsula’ vs. ‘San Francisco’? Why can’t I just find places a few miles from where I work without having to name all the cities and locations?”. His reaction is an indication of a problem we have gotten used to living with.

And that’s just one side of the story. Service providers and sellers have there own wish list. My auto mechanic once complained – “I love technology and all but it takes so much time to handle it”. “How so?” - I wondered. “Well, I can call the newspaper and ask them to print my Ad. But with online classifieds, I have to go and do it manually, keep re-posting as my posts expire in 30 days. And if I don’t submit frequently enough, I don’t even figure in the first few pages on most classified sites . There doesn’t seem to be a solution, even for a price except my own time”. With technology things should be more efficient, not more complicated.

A different set of problems exists with the way interaction with the world has changed. More people are relying on finding jobs through referrals than through Classifieds services. My friend wants to go to places that his circle of friends have recommended but any online discount is a bonus. He wants to be able to ask some questions before he purchases a used bike – without giving away his email or phone number. He wants easier ways of finding stuff and saving them and accessing vital information anytime, anywhere. And more importantly, he doesn’t want to have to come back to a Desktop – we are in a mobile world and we want all these conveniences on the go. Wouldn’t we all like that in our classifieds service?
